Prof. Austin Burt

Professor of Evolutionary Genetics, Imperial College London, and Principal Investigator of Target Malaria

Prof. Austin Burt has been a pioneer for over 10 years in the development of novel genetic approaches to reduce the burden of malaria and contribute to its elimination. He founded and is Principal Investigator of Target Malaria, an international not-for-profit consortium of 14 research institutions seeking to develop self-sustaining modified mosquito technology for use in the most heavily malaria-affected regions of Africa. Previously he studied the biology of naturally-occurring gene drive systems and has co-authored a book on the topic (Genes in Conflict, with Robert Trivers). His background is in evolutionary biology and population genetics, having graduated from McGill University (Montreal).
