Guinea Worm

This crippling parasitic disease, also known as Dracunculiasis, is caused by a long, thread-like worm and transmitted when stagnant water contaminated by parasite-infected water fleas is swallowed. During the mid-1980s an estimated 3.5 million cases occurred in 20 countries worldwide, 17 of which were in Africa. In 2016, only 25 cases were reported globally.
