Approximately 1.5 billion people - a quarter of the world’s population - have been infected by soil-transmitted helminth infections such as hookworm, as well as roundworm and whipworm. Humans are infected when eggs present in human feces contaminate soil in areas where sanitation is poor.  Over 267 million preschool-age children and over 568 million school-age children live in affected areas.
